SINGAPORE — Mercedes AMG F1 has confirmed that George Russell will take a grid penalty at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix following technical evaluations of his power unit damage sustained in his late-race retirement at the previous round.

Engineers at Brackley and Brixworth determined that several key engine components required replacement beyond the driver's seasonal allocation. In tandem with the power unit change, Mercedes has opted to roll back portions of Russell's upgraded floor and sidepod aerodynamic package, reverting his W17 toward a known baseline setup to simplify car balance on Marina Bay’s demanding street layout.

The setback leaves Russell facing a steep recovery drive through the field on a circuit where overtaking remains notoriously difficult despite recent DRS zone revisions.

Conversely, the development presents a massive strategic opportunity for rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli. With Russell dropping down the starting order, Antonelli will run the full specification upgrade package as he looks to strengthen his position in the Drivers' Championship standings.

"Marina Bay rewards precision and clean weekend execution," Mercedes team representatives noted ahead of Friday practice. While Russell focuses on damage limitation, Antonelli stands poised to lead the Silver Arrows' charge under the Singapore floodlights.
