Verstappen Claims Singapore Pole as McLaren Teammates Collide in Sprint Chaos
Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix after an action-packed Saturday at Marina Bay that saw McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collide during a rain-affected Sprint.
SINGAPORE — Max Verstappen produced a clinical lap under the Marina Bay floodlights to claim pole position for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix, narrowly edging Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in a thrilling qualifying session.
Verstappen clocked a 1:31.373 to take top spot, bouncing back from Friday's yellow-flag investigation to lead the grid. Leclerc finished just 0.054 seconds adrift in second, while Hamilton rounded out an impressive third-place start for the Scuderia.
The high-stakes qualifying session followed a chaotic rain-disrupted Sprint race earlier in the day, which was headlined by a dramatic late-race collision between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Attempting a bold overtaking maneuver into Turn 7, Norris made contact with Piastri, forcing the Australian into retirement while Norris limped home in eighth.
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella criticized the late-race clash as "unacceptable," though race stewards ultimately determined both drivers contributed to the incident and issued no further penalties.
Frustrations over Marina Bay's narrow layout spilled over post-session, with both Verstappen and Hamilton calling on F1 management to review Sprint weekend formats on street circuits where overtaking remains notoriously hazardous.
With Mercedes' George Russell starting from the rear due to grid penalties, Verstappen and Leclerc are set to lead a high-voltage front row into Sunday's grand prix.
