Easy to Learn Doesn't Mean Shallow: Baseball Dream Is a Different Kind of Baseball Game

Free, playable in any browser, and happy with a few minutes a day. Baseball Dream isn't trying to copy every screen of a traditional management sim. It puts a pitch-by-pitch engine inside a baseball world that runs around the clock and that everyone shares.

Baseball Dream

Say "baseball management game" and most people picture the same thing. You buy it, install it on your computer, sit down alone with your save file and run an entire organization from the majors to the minors. Traditional management sims like OOTP have taken that experience remarkably deep over more than twenty years.

Baseball Dream takes a different road.

The barrier to entry is a web page

Baseball Dream is free to play. There is nothing to download and nothing to install. It runs in any browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone, and your progress lives in your account, so switching devices costs you nothing.

Traditional management games are usually a one-time purchase. On Steam in the US that is roughly 25 to 50 dollars depending on sales. They are also yearly releases: a new edition every year, and if you want the latest rosters and features, you buy again. Baseball Dream doesn't work that way. There is no annual edition; the world simply carries on, and new features arrive as updates to the same game. It also does its work on the server, so all your device has to do is open a web page.

The time cost is different too. Games, energy recovery and player growth all happen on the server while you are away. A few minutes a day to set up training and check results is a full day in this world.

Not the new kid

Baseball Dream has a big brother: Basketball Dream, which opened on April 4, 2012 and has been running ever since. And behind both games is the same single developer, who has now brought more than a decade of running an online sports world alone to baseball.

One world, shared by everyone

In a traditional management game, the world is your save file. Baseball Dream has a single world and every player lives in it. The season follows the calendar, games start at set times every day, and the postseason, the All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby all arrive on schedule.

On the same team, the owner, the general manager, the manager and the agents behind the players can all be different people. Each has their own permissions and goals, and a single game result ripples through player earnings, team finances, ballpark business and guild progress at once.

You truly own a player

In Baseball Dream you can build a player from nothing, plan his training, sign his contracts and deal with his injuries, then watch him climb from A to AA and AAA and, with some luck, reach PRO before retiring at the end of a 500-day career. The agent is a real role you play, not a computer opponent working behind the scenes.

Easy to learn doesn't mean shallow

Under the simple interface sits a pitch-by-pitch game engine. Platoon matchups, pitch repertoires and command, defense and baserunning, bullpen moves, tactics, weather, the plate umpire's zone, park effects, fatigue and injuries all count on every pitch, and box scores and career statistics are kept for good.

A different kind of depth

To be honest, if what you want is control of an entire organization, with scouting, drafts and more than a century of historical data, traditional management games are still deeper in those areas. Baseball Dream isn't trying to copy every one of their screens.

What it offers is a different kind of depth: a place of your own in a baseball world that never stops. A traditional management game lets you run a baseball organization. Baseball Dream lets you live inside a baseball world.

For Baseball Dream players

If you have a friend who loves baseball but never has time to sit at a computer with a management sim, Baseball Dream might be exactly what they need. Open the page, create a player and spend a few minutes a day with him. The world will play the rest of the games for you.
